Research & teaching
Coastal ecosystems, climate & teaching
Welcome to my academic homepage. Here you'll find my research on coastal ecosystems, selected publications, the courses I teach, and how to reach me.
Contact meI study how coastal wetlands respond to a warming climate, and how we can restore them. My work sits between field ecology and policy, and I teach students to ask careful questions of messy natural systems.
Research interests
Coastal wetland restoration
How salt marshes and mangroves recover after disturbance, and what makes a restoration project last.
Blue carbon & climate
Measuring how much carbon coastal ecosystems store, and what that means for climate policy.
Community-led monitoring
Working with coastal communities to track change on their own shorelines, and putting that data to use.

Courses I teach
Autumn · undergraduate. An introduction to the ecology of shorelines, estuaries, and wetlands, with three field trips and a group research project. Assessed by fieldwork report and a final exam.
Spring · graduate seminar. We read current research on sea-level rise, blue carbon, and coastal adaptation, and each student leads one week's discussion.
Tuesdays 2–4 pm in the Marine Sciences building, room 214, or by appointment. Drop in with questions about the courses, my research, or graduate study — no need to book ahead.
